01/17/2007 - Clemson, SC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Their reign atop the national polls was short-lived, now the fourth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels must find a way to bounce back from a devastating loss, as they invade Littlejohn Coliseum, for a big ACC showdown with the 19th-ranked Clemson Tigers.
Roy Williams' team reached the top spot in the national polls last week, but a surprising 94-88 loss at Virginia Tech this past weekend, halted a 12- game win streak and gave the team just its second loss of the season.
The Tigers are also coming off a loss, the first of the season for Clemson, which won its first 17 games to start the campaign. Oliver Purnell's squad took their undefeated record into College Park over the weekend and left with a 92-87 defeat.
The Tar Heels own a huge 117-19 lead in the all-time series with Clemson and have won 30 of the last 36 meetings overall. However, Clemson has won three of the last five meetings at home (2001, 2003, 2004). These teams met just once a season ago, with UNC capturing a 76-61 decision in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels turned the ball over a sloppy 17 times and paid the price for it, as the Hokies knocked off yet another ACC power with a solid showing over the weekend. The Heels cut a 22-point Hokie lead to eight, but UNC could not get the win in Blacksburg. All-American Tyler Hansbrough continued his strong play in the paint, finishing with a double-double consisting of 19 points and 15 rebounds. Point guard Ty Lawson finished with 16 points and six assists, while fellow freshmen Brandan Wright and Wayne Ellington checked in with 13 and 12 points, respectively. It has been the sophomore and trio of freshmen that have led the team all season long. Hansbrough paces the team in both scoring (18.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg). Wright follows in both categories (15.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg). The perimeter game is handled by Ellington (12.4 ppg, .404 from three-point range) and Lawson (9.2 ppg, team-high 5.2 apg). Despite the poor defensive effort that allowed Virginia Tech to roll up 94 points, UNC is still allowing just 66.6 ppg. The offensive end is where North Carolina thrives though, averaging 88.8 ppg (second in the nation), on .502 shooting from the field.
Clemson has surged to its 17-1 record with strong play at both ends of the court. The team is getting it done offensively thanks to scoring depth that features five players currently averaging double digits, resulting in a solid 78.4 ppg. K.C. Rivers hasn't started a single game, but is perhaps the ACC's best sixth-man, as he is shooting .480 from the floor and .448 from behind the arc (52-of-116), leading to a team-high 15.2 ppg. James Mays is the team's primary option in the low post, averaging 13.4 ppg and leading the team in rebounding (7.7 rpg) and steals (39). Vernon Hamilton (11.8 ppg, 3.9 apg) and Cliff Hammonds (10.5 ppg, 3.6 apg) make up the starting backcourt, while Trevor Booker (10.2 ppg, team-high 32 blocks) mans the middle. Clemson played well enough to win at Maryland, but the Terrapins shot a scorching .627 from the floor to get the victory at home. Mays dominated in the low post, recording a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive glass. Rivers poured in 18 points, followed by Hamilton's 15. Booker chipped in 14 points, while Hammonds finished things off with 11.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
